Medical education is fundamental to clinical success. This week, Enovis Surgical hosted a series of intensive SkillsLAB sessions in Verona, Italy, focusing on the latest advancements in hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty. These labs provide surgeons with a hands-on environment in which to refine complex techniques under the guidance of an international faculty, going beyond theory. Below is a technical overview of the week’s focus areas:
Hip: Bone Preservation and the Direct Anterior Approach
The Hip SkillsLAB focused on the clinical rationale for the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). The curriculum emphasised bone-preserving solutions, enabling participants to explore also a less invasive and streamlined technique. Analyzing the advantages of the technique and the indications and results of the implant solutions, the SkillsLab was completed by practical sessions focused on anatomical mastery and the application of the bone-preservation principles.
Knee: Mastering Biomechanics and Kinematics
At the core of the Knee SkillsLAB there was the primary total knee replacement (TKR). The faculty helped attendees to navigate the challenges of restoring natural joint motion by addressing biomechanics and kinematics, analyzing also patients indications. Through the synergy of implant design and surgical precision, the path to primary TKR was paved.
Shoulder: From Stemless Solutions to Mixed Reality
The programme examined the evolution of reconstruction surgery, focusing on two key clinical areas:
- Stemless Anatomic TSA: Focus on design rationale and fixation principles for cementless configurations;
- Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA): Management of monoblock systems and lateralising glenospheres.
A highlight of the session was the integration of Augmented reality. This technology provides an immersive platform for preoperative planning and execution, demonstrating how digital tools are now an essential component of the modern orthopaedic workflow.
At Enovis Surgical, we believe that the best outcomes are achieved when advanced surgical skill is paired with cutting-edge technology. Our SkillsLABs facilitate this, providing a collaborative space for discussing complex pathologies and refining techniques that enhance the quality of patient care.
Together, we improve patient lives by raising the bar for surgical education. Discover more about our activities on the Medical Education Calendar.
