Our intensive, 3-days medical education course at the Verona SkillsLAB has just come to a close. The event brought together international orthopaedic surgeons for a combination of theoretical insights and hands-on wet lab training focused on advancing modern arthroplasty techniques and bone-preserving solutions.
Under the guidance of world-class faculty members from around the globe, attendees transitioned from in-depth biomechanical discussions to direct practical work in the laboratory, where they explored the latest materials and advanced surgical approaches.
The Verona SkillsLAB was structured around four pillars:
1. Knee SkillsLAB: Advanced Course on Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (UKR): This pathway focused on the balance of knee biomechanics and kinematics in partial knee arthroplasty.
2. Hip SkillsLAB: Bone Preservation Solutions for Primary THA Using the DAA: With a focus on the increasing demand for tissue-sparing techniques, this laboratory session enables surgeons to master the technical nuances of the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA).
3. Shoulder SkillsLAB: Primary Total and Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty: This course addressed the complex structural challenges of managing bone stock and glenoid defects in both anatomical and reverse shoulder replacements. It utilises advanced short-stem options and novel Trabecular Titanium (TT) glenoid baseplates featuring central screw fixation.
4. ASTRA ARVIS Shoulder SkillsLAB: using ASTRA PORTAL and ASTRA ARVIS augmented reality navigation alongside the Adaptable Arm, delegates navigated Enovis primary shoulder implants in real time, simulating a true OR setting.
On top of faculty-led lectures, the programs included complex case-sharing and active surgical replication, with participants already having a solid foundational understanding of specific joint anatomy and pathology. This high standard enabled exceptional peer-to-peer interaction throughout the courses. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our exceptional faculty members for sharing their surgical expertise, and to all the attendees whose active participation and commitment ensured the success of this session.
