The knee is a hinge joint composed of three main bones: the femur, tibia, and patella.In a total knee replacement, three implant components—femoral, tibial, and patellar—are used to substitute these bones.If only one part of the knee is affected, the surgeon may opt for a smaller implant, a procedure known as unicompartmental knee replacement.
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint formed by the femur and the pelvis. When damaged, it can be replaced with a prosthesis.The femoral head is replaced with a metal or ceramic ball, while a plastic or ceramic liner is used to resurface the damaged acetabulum. On the femoral side, the surgeon selects the appropriate type and size of prosthetic stem.
The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint connecting the humerus to the scapula. When needed, surgeons may replace it with a total or partial prosthesis.There are two main types of shoulder prostheses: anatomical and reverse. Anatomical prostheses preserve the natural structure of the shoulder, while reverse prostheses switch the position of the ball and socket components.
