The hip is a ball-and-socket joint formed by the femur and the pelvis. When damaged, it can be replaced with a prosthesis.The femoral head is replaced with a metal or ceramic ball, while a plastic or ceramic liner is used to resurface the damaged acetabulum. On the femoral side, the surgeon selects the appropriate type and size of prosthetic stem.
