Do You Know? The Legacy and Future of RM Technology

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. As part of our new ‘Do You Know?’ series, where we explore the landmark innovations that have defined Enovis as a pioneer in shoulder arthroplasty, we are proud to present the evolution of RM Technology.

History of RM Technology development:

As early as the 1970s, Robert Mathys, Sr. pursued the pioneering idea of developing isoelastic monoblock implants, hip and shoulder (1973 humeral stem).

This idea and the tribological option of a vitamin E-enriched, highly cross-linked polyethylene (VEPE) resulted in the unique hip RM Pressfit vitamys cup. The forerunner being the RM Classic titanium-coated cup (1983). The basic philosophy based on Wolff’s law, which has proven its worth over many years, convinces with excellent clinical outcomes and outstanding international registry data for the RM Pressfit vitamys cup.

Titanium particle coating

The titanium particle coating enhances full contact and mechanical stability with bone. The mechanical connection between the implant and bone is improved further by the micro structuring of the coating. RM technology titanium-coated implants are characterized by their bio-inert behaviour and the known osseointegration ability of titanium.

Use in Shoulder

With the success of the RM technology in the hip RM Pressfit vitamys cup, the same technology was carried on to develop the Affinis Glenoid vitamys uncemented, as a follow-on from the successful Affinis Glenoid vitamys cemented. The cementless fixation eliminates the risk of thermal damage to the surrounding bone while also decreasing the surgery time. It is respectful of tissues and tissue ongrowth and results show excellent clinical and radiological short-term result. (ICSES Oral Poster)

The first implantation of the Affinis Glenoid vitamys uncemented occurred in January 2020.
